Global Study Launch in Washington DC on 12 May

Thursday 12 May the Global Study was launched in three locations in South Africa, Thailand and the USA. The launch in the USA took place on Capitol Hill in Washington DC and was hosted by Congressman Chris Smith and facilitated by Ernie Allen, member of the High-Level Taskforce guiding the Global Study. The Global Study was presented by Ms. Carol Bellamy on the main findings of the Global Study on Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism. After the presentation of the Global Study Congressman Chris Smith called out for a global response in line with the US’ International Megan’s Law. Senator Richard Shelby and Senator Bob Corker also endorsed the Global Study findings and the need for international cooperation. Ms. Natalia Vollin Lehr explained the strategy of Carlson Rezidor to prevent and report. Ms. Marta Santos Pais, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children and Mr. Cornelius Williams , Associate Director of UNICEF’s child protection programme division stressed underlined the global importance of the findings and how the recommendations must be used for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Ms. Corinne Dettmeijer-Vermeulen, the National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence against Children of The Netherlands as well as a member of the Taskforce guiding the Global Study highlighted the responsibilities of all countries worldwide to take a part in the combat against SECTT. Ms. Carol Smolenski, Director of ECPAT USA, focused on the importance of the Study findings for the United States and possibilities for companies and the government to improve prevention.. There were approximately 80 participants, including media.
